Modeling PIEZO associated diseases in C. elegans

Channelopathies are diseases or physiological disorders caused by the dysfunction of ion channel proteins. The mechanosensitive channels PIEZO1 and PIEZO2 have been tightly linked to multiple diseases, such as distal arthrogryposis, dehydrated hereditary stomatocytosis, and Gordon Syndrome. Our lab aims to establish precision modeling of the conserved PIEZO pathogenic variants and to identify molecular determinants or/and pathways that suppress or revert the defects in the PIEZO patient variants. This basic research will help us understand PIEZO-related channelopathies and potentially guide the design of therapeutics.
